The global oil market experienced a significant surge in prices, with a more than 7% increase, as renewed military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Saudi Arabia stirred fears of potential disruptions to energy supplies worldwide. Brent crude saw an uptick of nearly 8%, reaching around $90.75 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose almost 7% to approximately $84.76 per barrel. This sharp rise followed a series of fresh military exchanges that have escalated concerns about a prolonged conflict in the region.

In a recent development, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it had launched ballistic missiles targeting U.S. military facilities in Jordan, a move it described as a response to recent American military actions. Concurrently, U.S. and Saudi forces conducted coordinated strikes on Iran-backed militant positions in Iraq, asserting that the operation aimed at logistics and weapons sites connected to repeated drone attacks on military and energy infrastructure.

The conflict has also heightened worries regarding maritime security. The IRGC reported that its naval forces intercepted and attacked three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, claiming the vessels ignored navigation warnings. In a separate incident, Yemen’s Houthi rebels stated they had targeted a Saudi-linked oil tanker in the Red Sea, further contributing to the growing risks faced by commercial shipping in these critical waterways.

This renewed instability has amplified fears about potential disruptions in supply through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, two of the world’s most vital energy transit lanes. Market analysts have cautioned that ongoing attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure could sustain elevated oil prices and lead to increased volatility in global markets, impacting economic stability.
