In 2025, Luxembourg found itself among the lowest-ranked European Union countries for the consumption of renewable electricity, according to recent data from Eurostat. Despite an overall increase in renewable energy usage across the EU, only 23.3% of Luxembourg’s gross electricity consumption was derived from renewable sources. This placed the country just above Czechia and Malta within the EU’s ranking.
On a broader scale, Luxembourg’s gross final energy consumption from renewable sources stood at 20.2%, placing it among the lower-performing nations in the bloc. The EU as a whole saw renewable energy make up 26.2% of its gross final energy consumption in 2025, marking a significant rise from 9.6% in 2004. This growth aligns with the EU’s ambitious target of achieving 42.5% renewable energy consumption by 2030.
Leading the charge in renewable energy, Sweden reported a remarkable 65.4% of its overall energy consumption coming from renewable sources, positioning it at the forefront of the EU. Finland and Denmark also ranked highly, showcasing impressive renewable energy statistics.
Austria, however, emerged as the top performer in terms of renewable electricity consumption, with more than 90% of its electricity being generated from renewable sources. This highlights Austria’s significant strides in adopting sustainable energy solutions within the region.
