In a recent shift within the airport rankings in Europe, Istanbul Airport surpassed Heathrow as the busiest airport on the continent for the month of July. During this period, Istanbul Airport accommodated 8.15 million passengers, exceeding Heathrow’s count of 7.86 million. The change comes as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decline in passenger numbers compared to July of the previous year, whereas Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase in traffic.
The reduction in Heathrow’s passenger figures has been partly attributed to disruptions related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This situation has intensified discussions around the need for Heathrow to expand its capacity. Currently operating with two runways that are nearing full capacity, Heathrow has proposed a significant expansion plan. The proposed £33 billion project aims to add a third runway, potentially boosting the airport’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers. Heathrow officials have emphasized that expanding the airport is crucial for enhancing the UK’s international connectivity, trade, and tourism sectors.
Since its opening in 2018, Istanbul Airport has capitalized on its larger site and 24-hour operational capability. Presently, it operates with three runways and plans to introduce a fourth runway by the end of 2026, which may further bolster its capacity and efficiency.
While Heathrow faced these challenges, other UK airports showed promising results. London Stansted and Manchester airports both reported their busiest-ever July, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively. This growth highlights the increasing demand for air travel within the UK, further underscoring the necessity for infrastructure developments to meet passenger needs.
